Tawaf is seven complete circuits around the Kaaba, keeping it on your left, beginning and ending at the Black Stone (al-Hajar al-Aswad). You need wudu for tawaf.

Before you start

  • Idtibaʿ (men): pass the upper sheet under your right arm and over your left shoulder, uncovering the right shoulder. This applies only during this tawaf.
  • Find the starting line: face the Black Stone corner. A green light on the wall of the mosque opposite it marks the line.

How to perform tawaf

  1. Make the intention

Intend in your heart to perform tawaf for your Umrah.
  2. Begin at the Black Stone (istilam)

Face it and touch or kiss it if you can do so without harming anyone. Otherwise raise your right hand towards it, say the takbir, and begin walking.
  3. Circle counter-clockwise

Walk with the Kaaba on your left. Each return to the Black Stone line completes one circuit; raise your hand and say the takbir each time.
  4. Raml (men, first three circuits)

Walk briskly with short steps for the first three circuits, if the crowd allows, then walk normally for the last four.
  5. Supplicate freely

There is no fixed dua for each circuit. Use your own words, in any language, along with dhikr and Quran.
  6. Complete seven circuits

If you lose count, build on the number you are sure of.
At the Black Stone
Sunnah

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ، وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ

Bismillāhi, wallāhu akbar.

In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

At the start of each circuit. Touch or kiss the stone if you can; otherwise raise your right hand towards it.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1613 (takbir); al-Bayhaqi 5/79

Between the Yemeni Corner (the corner before the Black Stone) and the Black Stone, recite:

Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone
Quran

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanah, wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanah, wa qinā 'adhāban-nār.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

On each circuit, along the stretch between the two corners.

Quran 2:201; Sunan Abi Dawud 1892

Beginning Tawaf
In your own words

“O Allah, I begin this Tawaf seeking Your mercy, forgiveness and acceptance.”

There is no fixed dua for each circuit. Speak to Allah in your own language.

After the seventh circuit

Cover your right shoulder again. Go towards Maqam Ibrahim, recite the verse, and pray two short rakʿahs behind it. If it is crowded, pray anywhere in the mosque.

At Maqam Ibrahim
Quran

وَاتَّخِذُوا مِن مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى

Wattakhidhū min maqāmi Ibrāhīma muṣallā.

And take the standing place of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.

After the seventh circuit, before praying two rakʿahs behind the Maqam, or anywhere in the mosque if crowded.

Quran 2:125; Sahih Muslim 1218

Then drink Zamzam. Coolers are everywhere in the mosque. Face the Kaaba if you can and ask for whatever you need.

Drinking Zamzam
Reported

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا، وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ

Allāhumma innī as'aluka 'ilman nāfi'an, wa rizqan wāsi'an, wa shifā'an min kulli dā'.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision and a cure for every illness.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for." Ask for what you need.

Sunan Ibn Majah 3062 (hadith); the dua is reported from Ibn ʿAbbas (al-Daraqutni)
