Why we rank Makkah hotels by walking time, not distance
"300 metres from the Haram" can mean a 4-minute stroll or a 12-minute climb. Here is how our hotel finder measures it.
Hotel listings love "metres from the Haram". The figure is usually measured from the hotel to the centre of the mosque, in a straight line. Neither of those is how you actually walk.
Three things straight lines miss
- Gates. You enter at a gate, not the centre. A hotel opposite King Fahd Gate and a hotel opposite Bab al-Salam may be the same distance from the Kaaba but very different distances from their nearest door.
- Streets and tunnels. Pedestrian routes in Makkah wind around tower complexes, underpasses and closed roads.
- Hills. Makkah sits in a valley. Several popular districts are on slopes, so the walk back after Isha can be uphill all the way.
What we do instead
For every hotel near both mosques we calculate the walking route along the OpenStreetMap footpath network to each gate, keep the quickest, and add the height difference between the hotel and that gate. The hotel finder then shows lines like:
7 min walk to King Fahd Gate · 18 m uphill on the way back
It's still an estimate. Crowds at prayer times can double the time, and routes change during construction. But it's a much better way to compare.
